Sankofa Singapore was established in April 2019 as a community based performing arts company, with the objective of promoting African performing arts and culture in Singapore and beyond, carrying on the mission of its UK-based sister company Frititi Traditional African Drumming & Dance Ltd, who’s been a champion of this vision since its inception in 1993.
A key focus of the company is to project a more positive image of Africa, to help dispel the myths and negative stereotypes of the continent and its people. We have a passion to celebrate, increase and develop awareness of the great contributions made by African cultures to the world and allow individuals to explore their own abilities, creativity, mental and physical wellbeing through these many rich cultural traditions.
Sankofa sets itself apart with Artistic Director Nii Tagoe at the helm, bringing with him a lifetime wealth of knowledge, experience and repertoire that spans across the African continent and from around the world.
With music and dance as its foundation, the communal and performative aspects of our work support each other, opening routes to discovery and development for many people. Sankofa aims to achieve its vision through engagements and experiences in the form of workshops, performances, masterclasses, school programmes, collaborations and community engagements.
